Gematria, a form of numeric-symbolism, taken from the Greek word geōmetriā, is a system of assigning numerical values to words, names, and even entire phrases in order to uncover divine secrets encoded in texts. It has a long history reaching back to ancient Jewish mysticism, where particular numerologies were said to contain secret spiritual meanings.
The numerical value of each letter of the alphabet is determined by its position in the Hebrew or Greek alphabetical order. For example, in the Hebrew alphabet language "Aleph" (א) would be given the number one," Bet" (ב) would be given the number two, and so on. When it comes to English words or phrases, the Gematria system would assign specific numerical values using letter substitutions that reflect how values are assigned in the Greek or Hebrew alphabet.
When it comes to creating meaningful associations between words whose numerological value matches up within Gematria practice there are varying theories as to how this form of divination system works. Depending on which method you use - whether it's traditional Hebrew Gematria or some other style like Simple Gematria - many different practices have been adopted over time. Although some focus on more abstract concepts than others, what remains consistent is that each letter is assigned a numeric root that can create fascinating insight into physical and abstract topics alike.
For instance, according to Traditional Kabalistic Gematria practice, words like "Love" (אהבה) and "Peace" (שלום) both have values equaling 31 and represent certain concepts as matched within their common numerical root (the two words could therefore be said to echo one another). In truth though, such findings are rarely definitive – instead providing an interpretive layer for modern day connotations; for example 'Peace' now offering implications of an inner yearning for peace far beyond its literal definition as an end to external conflict.
