gematria is an ancient numerological system which assigns numerical value to words or phrases. It originated in the Greek and Hebrew cultures and was used to interpret the hidden meaning of religious texts. In modern times, gematria has been used by some numerologists to interpret words, names, dates, and even entire books.
At its most basic level, gematria assigns a numerical value to each letter in the alphabet and then uses this value to determine the underlying meaning of words or phrases. For example, in Hebrew each letter is assigned a numerical value based on its position in the alphabet so Aleph (א) is given a value of 1 and Tav (ת) has a value of 400. If we assign "Heart" (לבב) with these values: Lamed (ל): 30; Bet (ב): 2; Bet (ב): 2 we can then add up the total numerical value which would be 34.
More complex methods of gematria involve assigning two values to each letter and combining those two numbers by multiplying them for an even deeper reading of the text at hand. For example, if we take Hebrew again, some gematrias assign 1-9 as one set of numerical values while 10-90 are assigned as another set allowing us to randomly or systematically separate letters into either category depending on our purpose.
Gematria is also sometimes used by astrologers and numerologists who believe that certain numbers represent certain characteristics or energies so they will look for these number combinations within images or typesetting when searching for signs or messages that may be encoded within them.
