A salad is the perfect companion to any meal: light, low in calories and brimming with health benefits. But just chopping up some lettuce and grilled chicken breast can get boring rather quickly. To switch things up and make your salads more exciting and creative, here are some combinations that you might try!
The Classics: You can't go wrong with a classic salad combo: fresh spinach leaves, tomatoes, cucumbers, boiled eggs, and a simple vinaigrette dressing. This is easy to make and incredibly tasty—a great way to get your veggies in!
Fruits & Veggies: Adding a balance of nutrient-rich fruit and vegetables to your salad is always a good idea. Try adding berries such as strawberries, blueberries or chopped apples for sweetness with crunchy vegetables such as carrots or green beans for texture. To bring it all together, dress this mixture with a balsamic or honey Dijon vinaigrette.
Nuts & Seeds: Nuts are a great source of plant-based protein and healthy fats – try mixing walnuts or almonds into your salad to pump up the nutrition level! Incorporating seeds like chia and sunflower are also terrific additions that you can sprinkle on top. These can be tossed into any combo you create for an extra crunchy topping.
Pasta Salad: Crabmeat pasta salads are always popular at potlucks and backyard BBQs! Separate cooked mini shells noodles with chunks of tomato, shredded Italian cheeses such as mozzarella or parmesan cheese, lightly sautéed red onion pieces, diced peppers and crabmeat. Then coat this combination with an olive oil-based dressing for added citrus flavor!
Cheesy Mexican Salad: A cheesy Mexican salad is always a hit when having taco night at home or serving guests snacks before dinner! Start off by mixing together jalapeno pepper slices, fresh cilantro leaves, corn kernels (cooked or canned), chopped tomatoes, shredded lettuce mix and drained black beans in a large bowl then top it off with finely grated sharp cheddar cheese or Mexican blend cheese shreds. You could also give it an extra kick by sprinkling some hot sauce over it before serving!
